Day Eleven : 7th November

7th December

"Come unto Him, all ye that labour and, are heavy laden, and he shall give you rest.
Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him;
for He is meek and lowly of heart:
and ye shall find rest unto your souls."
(Soprano Aria in Handel's "Messiah")

on December 7th we remember Ambrose of Milan

Ambrose was a lawyer in Milan. The bishop there died, and at the time Ambrose was negotiating between the Catholic party and the Arian party. (church divisions are nothing new!) "The consular came down to the church to keep the peace between the contending parties and was addressing the people in his character as civil magistrate, when a cry was heard "Ambrose for bishop!" The voice was said afterwards to have been that of a child. Whose ever cry it may have been, in a moment it struck the whole multitude that here was a solution in which both parties might acquiesce without the sense of defeat." Smith and Wace, Dictionary of Christian Biography, Vol 1, page 92

[Ambrose]… "was then a christian by belief, but unbaptized, … With some hesitation, he accepted the see, was baptized and ordained…"
The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church. 2nd ed. (eds Cross and Livingstone)
