Day Seventeen : 14th December

Kneeler Seventeen

Isaiah 13

10 For the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light;
the sun will be dark at its rising, and the moon will not shed its light.

11 I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquitiy;
I will put an end to the pride of the arrogant,
and lay low the insolence of tyrants.

Brueggemann (1) p 118/119:

'…in an effort to state the threat in the most severe way imaginable, the poet brings the cosmic dimension of "the day" [of the Lord] to sharper focus. (v.10) … stars, sun, and moon — all creatures of Yahweh — refuse to function in order to permit the darkness of death that Yahweh wills in the earth. The political-military crisis is given cosmic scope because the one who sends the armies is the creator of the heavens and the governor of the earth.

… Yahweh has declared war on evil, the wicked, the pride of the arrogant, the insolence of tyrants. All of this is a raw challenge to Yahweh's rule, and it will not be tolerated.'
