Lent Day Ten

Genesis 42

Egyptian court

Zornberg finds much in this chapter.

on page 301 she works out the "dialectical vision" in the story which is the contrast between "brokenness" and "hope" in many of the stories....

Joseph "is not". but Jacob still hears the word from Egypt about food.

305-6 "...Joseph is lost—both to his family and himself.

"There is a need to recognize the lostness, to gauge the space he has placed between himself and his memories.

And so he names his sons for discontinuity and survival.

He defines the real dilemma of 'Let us live and not die,' which is the problem of both giving life and preserving life, of growing corn and preserving it against corruption, of forgetting and remembering.
