Jesus weeps
by Malcolm Guite

Jesus comes near and he beholds the city
And looks on us with tears in his eyes,
And wells of mercy, streams of love and pity
Flow from the fountain whence all things arise.
He loved us into life and longs to gather
And meet with his beloved face to face.
How often has he called, a careful mother,
And wept for our refusals of his grace,
Wept for a world that, weary with its weeping,
Benumbed and stumbling, turns the other way;
Fatigued compassion is already sleeping
Whilst her worst nightmares stalk the light of day
But we might waken yet, and face those fears,
If we could see ourselves through Jesus’ tears.

Hector Berlioz(1803-1869). “Resurrexit” from the Messe Solennelle (1824). Monteverdi Choir, Orchestre Révolutionaire et Romantique, cond. John Eliot Gardiner (1993).

Et resurrexit tertia die
secundum scripturas.
Et ascendit in coelum,
sedet ad dexteram Patris.
Et iterum venturus est cum gloria
judicare vivos et mortuos.
Cujus regni non erit finis.
Et in Sanctum Spiritum
Dominum et vivificantem,
qui ex Patre et Filio procedit,
qui cum Patre et Filio simul
adoratur et conglorificatur,
qui locutus est per Prophetas.
Et unam, sanctam, catholicam
et apostolicam ecclesiam.
Confiteor unum baptisma
in remissionem peccatorum.
Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum.
Et vitam venturi saeculi.
Amen.

On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy, catholic.
and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

May God our Redeemer show us compassion and love. Amen.
