Week Two : Prayers plainly spoken

Emeritus Professor Stanley Hauerwas.

Stanley Hauerwas

Stanley Hauerwas (1940- ) is an American theologian, ethicist, and public intellectual. A longtime professor at Duke University, Hauerwas is considered by many to be one of the world's most influential living theologians. His work is frequently read and debated by scholars in fields outside of religion, theology, or ethics, such as political philosophy, sociology, history, and literary theory. Though Hauerwas is most well known for his work related to Christian ethics, he has written widely on a diverse range of subjects.

In Prayers Plainly Spoken (Downer's Grove: Inter-Varsity Press, 1999) Hauerwas presents some of the 'plainly spoken' prayers he shared with his students at the beginning of university classes. He writes: "If any one thing characterizes these prayers, it is a confidence that God wants our prayers and the prayers God wants are our prayers. We do not need to hide anything from God, which is a good thing given the fact that any attempt to hide from God will not work. God wants us to cry to shout to say what we think we understand and what we do not."

Paintings of flowers, many from the Butchart Gardens near Victoria in British Columbia, are by distinguished Canadian artist Dr Marney Ward, SFCA, SCA.

We enjoy singing by the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of Apostles who live at the Priory of Ephesus in Missouri.
